How To Put On A Zip-Free Wetsuit

A common misconception with a zip-free (zipperless) wetsuit is that they’re difficult to get into. Don't stress. If you’ve ever attempted getting into a chest-zip wetsuit, then you’ll have no issues trying on a zip-free wetsuit. Both entry systems are similar, however, there are a couple of minor differences. But the good news is, zip-free wetsuits tend to be made with extremely stretchy neoprene, which should simplify the whole process for you.

In the video below, our resident neoprene expert Will shows exactly how to get into a zip-free wetsuit. Will demonstrates this wearing a 2018 Rip Curl E-Bomb Pro 3/2mm Zip-Free wetsuit.

Step 1: Find the entry for the zip-free entry. This can be done by reaching inside the chest entry, grabbing the armpits and opening the suit up. This will ensure you have a clear way of getting into the wetsuit.

Step 2: Bend down and insert feet into the leg openings of the wetsuit, then pull the wetsuit up to the knees, and then continue all the way up to your waist.

Step 3: Once the wetsuit is pulled up to your waist, you need to find the zip-free side, as it allows for more stretch, which will make it easier for you to get your arm in. Note: It’s generally the left-hand side.

Step 4: Work your left arm through the opening and pull all the way up to your shoulder.

Step 5: Pull the other side of the wetsuit down. This will be the right-hand side. Then slip your right hand through the opening. Tip: If you lift your arm straight up in the air, it will be easier to get the wetsuit over your shoulder.

Step 6: Ensure all the excess neoprene around your chest and neck area is in the right position. This includes the panels around your neck which stops water seeping in.

Step 7: Reach for the zip-free entry system on the right side of your body. Tip: Make sure the adjuster is fully relaxed so you’re not overstretching the neoprene.

Step 8: Pull the zip-free entry system over your head, from right to left, ensuring that the neck seal if sitting comfortably around your neck.

Step 9: Pull the adjuster tight if need be. This will ensure no water seeps in.

Step 10: Time to go surfing!
